Different types of industrial applications rely on gearboxes (also referred to as reducers, gear reducers, speed reducers, gear drives or gearmotors) to reduce motor speed, change rotational direction and change shaft orientation (such as right angle, parallel or inline shaft gearboxes). NORD Drivesystems offers a number of distinct gearboxes specifically configured for varying needs.
Our gearboxes are suitable to many types of machinery and can be mounted to motors with a NEMA C-Face adapter, IEC or free input shaft designs, depending on the application need. NORD gearboxes are also available as fully integrated gearmotors, which offer the advantages of reduced materials costs, compact design, increased reliability and quieter operating levels. These integrated gearmotors are a far safer and more efficient, and durable solution compared to externally mounted speed reducer systems that require belts, chains or other open transmission devices.
Screw conveyors are designed for moving and distributing bulk material. Some common types of screw conveyors include horizontal/inclined shafted screw conveyors (the most common type of screw conveyor used for bulk material handling), shaftless screw conveyors (typically used with sticky, high moisture and viscous loads), screw feeders and live bottom conveyors (used to move various types of loads at a constant and controlled speed and usually incorporate more than one gearbox) and vertical screw conveyors (used to move dry or semi-fluid loads at very steep inclines).
Variable frequency drives (also called "VFDs," "AC vector drives," "inverters" or "variable speed drives") can be thought of as a motor controller that operates the motor by changing the applied voltage and frequency to the motor. A VFD can control the speed of a motor, as well as how it starts and stops. One advantage of using a VFD is it limits the inrush (starting) current, which is easier on the motor.
According to Electrical Construction and Maintenance Magazine, variable frequency drives are "the most effective motor controller in the industry today."
