Decentralized NORD drive technology in large wine cellars

For more than eight years, NORD DRIVESYSTEMS has supplied the leading French manufacturer of wine pumps, CAZAUX ROTORFLEX, with decentralized drive systems for their patented rotary lobe pumps (pompes à lobes). These systems are are in high demand from winegrowers and cellar masters around the world and consist of a geared motor combined with a variable frequency drive. NORD products were selected by CAZAUX for this application due to their versatility, reliability, and precise functionality.

Since wine is a sensitive product, pumping operations must be as gentle as possible. At the same time, high and uniform flow rates are required, even with very viscous intermediate and residual media, so that further processing can continue. This is ensured by the innovative operating principle of the LOB 300 rotary lobe pump that manages all wine cellar pumping and draining processes. With its patented double-bladed piston made of food-safe nitrile rubber, it ensures a high, uniform flow rate even with very viscous media that contains a large amount of solid matter. The LOB series lobe pumps are the latest innovation from CAZAUX ROTORFLEX, and the company relies on the robust, compact drive systems that NORD DRIVESYSTEMS provides to keep them operating at peak performance.

Reliable drives

CAZAUX purchases almost 400 products from NORD every year, including 230 geared motors with decentralized variable frequency drives alone. In addition to its high reliability and compact design, the quiet operation and versatile functionality of the drive systems convinced CAZAUX that these were the right solution for their needs. Additionally, the geared motors’ robust, lightweight aluminium construction stood out among the competition since mobile pumps need to be light and portable in order to easily move them where they are needed.

High precision at low speed

Variable frequency drives from the NORDAC FLEX series are characterized by their ability for precise movements. Extending into low speed ranges, these drive controls reliably prevent strong vibrations that impede operation and cause unecessary wear on the gear units. NORD drive systems ensure precise flow settings and can measure the density, temperature, and volume of the media at the same time. In addition, the variable frequency drives ensure smooth starting and stopping of the motor, enable self-regulating speeds adapted to specified pressure ranges, and provide effective protection against dry running.
