Before you can calculate gear ratio and speed, it's important to understand the definition of a gear. A gear is a toothed wheel that works together with another toothed wheel to alter the speed or direction of a driving mechanism (such as a motor).
Typically gears work in pairs; the driving gear and the driven gear. The driving gear is the gear that is rotated by the prime mover and the driven gear is the gear that is pushed (or driven) into rotation. A gear ratio is the relationship between the speed of the driving and driven gear in a gear set.
Production and operating costs can be significantly reduced by using conveyor belt systems with variable speed control. This is especially true in industries that rely heavily on the efficient movement of materials, such as material handling and processing plants.
