The NORD product portfolio of electronic drive technology supports drive-based functional safety for inverters in the control cabinet and in the field. The drives are integrated into the machines or systems in a safety-oriented manner via Ethernet and via discrete inputs and outputs.

For this purpose, the option modules read a safety-related encoder for monitoring movements. Therefore, safety-related functions can be implemented in application solutions without a machine stop.

While our NORDAC FLEX and NORDAC LINK products have already been field tested, we are planning to field test a number of other frequency inverters in the second half of 2023. Contact your NORD contact for a possible test application of NORD products in your plants.

Overview of safety functions

Perfomance Level (PL)

The requirements for safety functions and control systems are measured by the potential risk. Depending on the technology used, the reliability and flexibility of the systems also varies. The risk to man and machine can be measured using five levels (performance levels) from "a" to "e". Performance level "a" represents a low contribution of the control system to risk reduction, while level "e" defines a high contribution.

NORD frequency inverters equipped with drive-based functional safety always comply with performance levels "d" or "e".
