Here safety comes first –Industrial gear units from NORD in ropeway operation

Located at an altitude of 2,100 metres, Tignes is one of the highest villages in Europe. Connected to the Val d’Isère, it is one of the most luxurious skiing region in the French Department Savoy. When modernising the ropeway on the Grande Motte, Swiss company GARAVENTA relies on the reliable and low-maintenance industrial gear units from NORD DRIVESYSTEMS.

For this project, NORD DRIVESYSTEMS supplied GARAVENTA with two ready-to-install industrial parallel gear units as well as pre-assembled couplings and flywheels supplied by KTR Systems. The two-stage, size 14 MAXXDRIVE® parallel industrial gear units from NORD are characterised by a high power density and quiet operation. Large roller bearings ensure extremely high radial and axial load capacities and a long service life. The gear units also offer a modular, flexible design and various mounting options.

Apart from the weather resistance of the installed components, the placement within the compact UNICASE housing in the confined ropeway building spaces played an important role. To comply with the safety housing’s specified dimensions, connections were individually staggered and the peripherals accurately designed.

“Where the highest safety requirements must be met – like here in passenger transportation – our industrial gear units are the first choice”, says Daniel von Rickenbach, Sales Manager at the Swiss NORD subsidiary Getriebebau NORD AG. “Because they are used under even more significantly harder physical conditions, like conveyor systems in mining and cement industries.”
